E Ink Teams Up with MediaTek: Next-Gen Readers Get On-Device AI and Better Color

The core of the partnership

At Computex 2026, E Ink and MediaTek announced an expanded collaboration, combining E Ink Gallery and Kaleido color technology with MediaTek's new SoCs (MT8115 / MT8126) to evolve the digital reader into a "true smart device."

What on-device AI brings

The new chips emphasize on-device AI that runs without a network connection:

  • Real-time translation while reading foreign-language text;

  • Concise summaries of long documents;

  • Multi-speaker voice transcription and voice-to-text notes.

Better color e-paper

The partnership also promises improved color performance: displays up to 13.3 inches at 300 PPI, enhanced color rendering, and smoother page transitions and refreshes — a boon for magazines, textbooks, comics and educational material.

The debate

Brighter color and more power are welcome, but stuffing AI tools into e-readers is controversial. Many readers choose e-paper precisely to escape the constant notifications and AI nudges of phones and tablets. Making "smart" non-intrusive will be the real test for vendors.
