Kindle Jailbreak Compatibility Quick Reference
Covers all current and discontinued Kindle models · Firmware version requirements for jailbreaking each model
How to check your firmware version: On your Kindle: Menu → Settings → Menu → Device Info, where you will see the "Firmware Version".
Before jailbreaking: To prevent your Kindle from auto-updating during the jailbreak process, it is strongly recommended to fill the storage to leave less than 100MB free and delete any .bin files from the root directory of your Kindle.

This method comes from MobileRead. The idea: first flash a factory firmware onto the Kindle, then jailbreak that firmware. You must have a factory firmware matching your current firmware version — for example, the Oasis 2 only has factory builds for 5.9.0.5.1 and 5.9.0.6, so other versions (like 5.12.1) cannot be jailbroken this way.
Risk notice: Jailbreaking is risky — back up important Kindle data (usually the documents folder) first to avoid losing it. You are responsible for any consequences.
Part 1: Check the requirements
First confirm your Kindle serial's first 6 digits are in the jailbreakable list (see the MobileRead serial number table), and follow these rules:
The Kindle is registered to an Amazon account.
The battery is fully charged.
Special Offers are turned off.
Device password and Parental Controls are disabled.
Airplane Mode is on (offline).
Note: Each step below only needs to be done once; delete leftover files after a step completes.
Part 2: Install the factory firmware
Download the factory firmware matching your current firmware (a lower current version is fine). First check the firmware model matches your device, then confirm your current firmware ≤ the factory firmware's version; if it's higher, there is no usable factory build. Even if your version equals the factory build, you must still flash it to jailbreak.
Connect via USB and copy the factory firmware (.bin) to the root (same level as documents).
Eject, tap Menu → Settings → Menu → Update Your Kindle, and wait for the installation to finish.
Part 3: Jailbreak the factory firmware
Pick the section for your device.

Nothing visibly happens for a while — don't touch the device until
**** JAILBREAK ****appears at the bottom of the screen. That means success.

main-htmlviewer.tar.gzto the root, and eject.Type
;installHtmlin the search bar (semicolon, capital H, lowercase l), press Enter. The screen flashes and the device restarts — continue to Part 4.

Unzip to get
Merchant.zip.Connect via USB, copy
Merchant.zipto the root, and eject.Type
;merchant(semicolon included) and press Enter.A document named JailBroken appearing in the library means success.
Note: If you plan to update to the latest firmware, don't install plugins first — the jailbreak survives updates, plugins don't. If nothing above works, ask in the original thread.
Part 4: Install the patch
Before updating to the latest firmware, install the latest JailBreak Hotfix to keep the jailbreak; also disable automatic updates.
Download JailBreak-hotfix: Official page
Connect via USB and unzip
JailBreak-1.15.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zipto getUpdate_jailbreak_hotfix_1.15.N_install.bin.Copy the .bin file to the root and eject.
Tap Menu → Settings → Menu → Update Your Kindle and wait for the restart.
You can now update to the latest firmware and keep the jailbreak. If you reset the device, use a restore file to recover the jailbreak.
