Kindle Jailbreak Compatibility Quick Reference
Covers all current and discontinued Kindle models · Firmware version requirements for jailbreaking each model
How to check your firmware version: On your Kindle: Menu → Settings → Menu → Device Info, where you will see the "Firmware Version".
Before jailbreaking: To prevent your Kindle from auto-updating during the jailbreak process, it is strongly recommended to fill the storage to leave less than 100MB free and delete any .bin files from the root directory of your Kindle.

Kindle natively supports custom fonts since firmware 5.9.6 — confirm you actually need a jailbreak first.
Scope: This guide only covers the KPW2 on firmware 5.4.5.1 or older; for firmware ≥ 5.6.1 use the factory-firmware method. It also works for Kindle 5, Kindle Touch, KPW1, and KT2.
The idea: downgrade to an old jailbreakable firmware, jailbreak, then upgrade to the newest firmware. This solves the China 4GB KPW2 issues (auto-deleted jailbreak files, greyed-out update button). Jailbreaking is risky — proceed carefully.
Note: This guide successfully installs KOReader (invoked via KUAL). Screensaver/font changes won't work because the system auto-deletes .bin files.
Why jailbreak?
A jailbreak grants more privileges via plugins: custom system fonts, screensaver replacement, more e-book formats, better PDF reading. Downsides: higher power/storage usage and a small brick risk. If you have no clear need, skip it.
Preparation
Downgrade to 5.4.2: download the 5.4.2 firmware (177 MB), place
update_kindle_5.4.2.binat the root, and hold the power button (cable connected) until the update starts.Download the jailbreak files: kindle-jailbreak (580 KB).
Download the latest firmware: 5.4.5.1 firmware (177.4 MB).
Jailbreak in three steps
Unzip
kindle-jailbreak-1.11.N-r10947.tar, then unzipkindle-5.4-jailbreak.zipinside it to get 5 files:bridge.sh,developer.keystore,jb.sh,json_simple-1.1.jar,Update_jb_$(cd mnt && cd us && sh jb.sh).bin. Connect via USB and copy them all to the Kindle root.Eject, then on the Home screen: Home → Menu → Settings → Menu → Update Your Kindle. Nothing visibly happens for a while — don't touch the device until
**** JAILBREAK ****appears at the bottom of the screen.Upgrade to 5.4.5.1: put
update_kindle_5.4.5.1.binat the root and run Update Your Kindle again; wait for it to finish.
Installing KUAL and KOReader
The most common post-jailbreak plugin is KOReader, which reflows PDFs by segmenting images — solving large-PDF reading on 6-inch screens. Install it like any KUAL plugin: unzip to the extensions directory; KUAL loads the menu automatically.
Useful KUAL plugins
Kterm — a terminal console for shell access without usbnet mode.

Leafpad — a full GTK+-based text editor, ported to Kindle.

Download: Official
Kindle Explorer — a file browser that bundles Leafpad and kterm, so you can edit files or open a terminal from the file manager.

Download: MobileRead
Galculator — a full-featured calculator, ported to Kindle.

Download: MobileRead
SkipStone — a lightweight WebKit browser with tabs and download management, better than the stock Experimental Browser.
Download: MobileRead
Kindle Gallery — an image viewer for the stock Kindle OS.

Download: MobileRead
BatteryStatus — shows the battery percentage. Download: MobileRead
Uninstalling KUAL plugins: most are portable — just delete the folder under extensions; the menu entry disappears on next KUAL launch. Browse more plugins on MobileRead.
Removing the jailbreak
Back up books, dictionaries, and clippings first, then reset: Home → Menu → Settings → Menu → Reset Device.
