Nosebleed Jailbreak Guide: KPW5、Kindle 11、KO3 Firmware 5.16.4 ~ 5.18.6

Kindle Jailbreak Compatibility Quick Reference

Covers all current and discontinued Kindle models · Firmware version requirements for jailbreaking each model

How to check your firmware version: On your Kindle: Menu → Settings → Menu → Device Info, where you will see the "Firmware Version".

Before jailbreaking: To prevent your Kindle from auto-updating during the jailbreak process, it is strongly recommended to fill the storage to leave less than 100MB free and delete any .bin files from the root directory of your Kindle.

Risk notice: Jailbreaking is a system-level modification that carries some risk. Read the relevant documentation and weigh the possible consequences before you begin. This article is for reference only — you operate at your own risk.

Nosebleed is a Kindle jailbreak released by user hhhhhhhhh in March 2026 (official page). It exploits CVE-2020-16040: on firmware below 5.19.2, Amazon disabled just-in-time compilation (JIT) via a misguided command-line flag to harden the old Chromium, while the Paperwhite 5 and Kindle 11 run without the Chromium sandbox — which makes the jailbreak possible.

Compatibility note: The official page says the method was not tested on the Kindle Oasis 3, but several users report it works there.

Requirements

Supported devices (serial-number-free units included) running firmware 5.16.4 – 5.18.6:

  • Kindle Paperwhite 5 (KPW5 / PW5)

  • Kindle Paperwhite 5 Signature Edition (KPW5SE)

  • Kindle 11 (KT5 / K11)

  • Kindle Oasis 3 (KOA3 / KO3)

You also need a computer and a USB cable that supports data transfer.

Download

All required files are packed into nosebleed.zip — download and unzip it first:

Download: Official page | Baidu Netdisk

Steps

  1. Turn on Airplane Mode to prevent automatic firmware updates.

  2. Connect the Kindle to your computer via USB until the Kindle drive appears.

  3. Copy the three files jb, jb.sh, and patchedUks.sqsh to the Kindle root (same level as documents).

  4. Eject the drive and open the web browser from the top-right menu.

  5. Enter https://kindlemodding.org/nosb and press Enter (this needs network access; re-enable Airplane Mode right after).

  6. Tap the letter L on Jeff Bezos's forehead — the jailbreak is complete.

Note: An "Application Errors" dialog during the process is normal — ignore it.

Installing the patch

The Hotfix keeps your jailbreak alive after firmware updates, but patches usually lag behind Amazon's releases, so a new firmware can break them at any time. The more reliable approach is to disable automatic updates rather than rely on the patch alone.

Download Hotfix: Official releases

  1. Connect the Kindle to your computer via USB.

  2. Copy the .bin file to the Kindle root.

  3. Eject the drive and disconnect.

  4. Go to Settings → Update Your Kindle, install the patch, and wait for the restart.

  5. After reboot, tap the book named Run Hotfix.

Note: You must tap Run Hotfix again after every firmware update.

Installing plugins

From firmware 5.16.3, the Kindle's EABI switched from armel to armhf, so you need HF-capable plugins. Only a few plugins support HF so far (e.g. MRPI and KUAL — see the KindleModding install guide). To use non-HF plugins, downgrade the firmware below 5.16.3 first.
