Kindle Jailbreak Compatibility Quick Reference
Covers all current and discontinued Kindle models · Firmware version requirements for jailbreaking each model
How to check your firmware version: On your Kindle: Menu → Settings → Menu → Device Info, where you will see the "Firmware Version".
Before jailbreaking: To prevent your Kindle from auto-updating during the jailbreak process, it is strongly recommended to fill the storage to leave less than 100MB free and delete any .bin files from the root directory of your Kindle.

This jailbreak originates from a system-call vulnerability disclosed by MobileRead user GeorgeYellow — triggered by choosing Simplified Chinese during system initialization, granting system-level access. User Marek built a working implementation on top of it. Because it works by switching languages, it is called LanguageBreak.
Risk notice: This method may damage the Kindle system, including rendering it unusable or voiding the warranty. Read every step carefully and skip nothing. If you get stuck, check the original thread first.
Prerequisites
The flaw was patched in firmware 5.16.3, so your firmware must be 5.16.2.1.1 or lower. If it's lower, update to 5.16.2.1.1 first for the best success rate.
Preparation
Back up: the process may delete all user data — back up the documents folder (books, reading progress, notes).
Remove firmware files: if the device has been online, the latest firmware may already be downloaded and waiting to install on the next reboot. Delete any
.binfiles at the root and any partialupdate.bin.tmp.partial.Remove password: make sure no password lock is set. If you forgot it, type
111222777in the password field to reset (this wipes all user data).

The secret gesture
Note: Any later screen reading "This demonstration device is either missing content or is disconnected from the network" or "CONFIGURE DEVICE" needs the same gesture. If a "Collecting Debug Info" dialog pops up, you're retrying the wrong way — reset the Kindle and start over.

3. Finishing up
The test device (KPW4 on 5.16.2.1.1) rebooted into normal mode automatically, but some units stay in demo mode. Pick the case that matches:
Case A: still in demo mode after reboot
Type
;uzbto enable USB transfer.Connect via USB and copy the hotfix matching your UI language,
update_hotfix_languagebreak-xx-XX.bin(e.g. en-US), to the root.Eject, type
;dsts, tap Update Your Kindle in Settings, and wait for the restart.
Case B: booted into normal mode
Connect via USB and copy the matching hotfix to the root.
Tap Settings → Update Your Kindle to install; done after the restart.
Verify: Type ;log runme — if No user script found. appears top-left, the jailbreak works. If WiFi/Bluetooth misbehave, type ;demo, tap Yes on the right, let the Kindle reset, then reinstall the hotfix.
Installing the Hotfix
Before upgrading firmware (which closes the demo-mode hole), install the latest JailBreak Hotfix; also disable automatic updates.
Download JailBreak Hotfix: Official page
Connect via USB and unzip
JailBreak-x.xx.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zipto getUpdate_jailbreak_hotfix_x.xx.N_install.bin.Copy the .bin file to the root and eject.
Tap Menu → Settings → Menu → Update Your Kindle and wait for the restart.
After reboot you can safely update firmware (with MRPI installed, you can also drop the .bin into mrpackages and run
;log mrpi).
Installing plugins
Install plugins as usual after jailbreaking. If one fails to install, it's usually a compatibility issue — wait for the author to update. Important: when typing ;log commands, don't tap a history suggestion — retype the command with the on-screen keyboard.
FAQ
How do I reset properly? Whether quitting, un-jailbreaking, or retrying after a failure: reset first, then reinstall the same firmware. In normal mode: Settings → Device Options → Reset. In demo mode:
;demo→ Sideload Content → connect USB → create an empty file namedDO_FACTORY_RESTOREat the root → hold the power button until it restarts. How do I exit demo mode? Type
;demo, tap Yes on the right; the device resets into normal mode, then reinstall the hotfix. How do I downgrade firmware? Requires a special downgrade-capable firmware; confirm your device is jailbroken first.
How do I block auto-updates? Airplane Mode, manual updates, disabling WiFi auto-download.
What can I delete after jailbreaking? Keep
libkh,mkk,rp; deletelanguagebreak_log,LanguageBreakRan,patchedUks.sqsh.
Keep the jailbreak alive: do not upgrade the firmware — anything newer than 5.16.2.1.1 breaks it.
