Kindle Jailbreak Compatibility Quick Reference
Covers all current and discontinued Kindle models · Firmware version requirements for jailbreaking each model
How to check your firmware version: On your Kindle: Menu → Settings → Menu → Device Info, where you will see the "Firmware Version".
Before jailbreaking: To prevent your Kindle from auto-updating during the jailbreak process, it is strongly recommended to fill the storage to leave less than 100MB free and delete any .bin files from the root directory of your Kindle.

Sanctuary Jailbreak Guide – Kindle Firmware 5.16.4–5.18.3 Sanctuary Jailbreak Guide – Kindle Firmware 5.16.4–5.18.3
Universal Guide for All Supported Versions
Sanctuary is a Kindle jailbreak solution jointly released by Ava, Alysa (Sky), and sparklerfish on June 30, 2026. Detailed step-by-step instructions have been published on the KindleModding website. This method exploits a browser vulnerability present in specific firmware versions; the authors have not yet disclosed the technical details.
1. Requirements
Sanctuary works on all Kindle devices running firmware 5.16.4 through 5.18.3, including devices that cannot be registered with an Amazon account.
Because the process requires a Wi-Fi connection, please ensure that your Kindle’s storage is filled enough to prevent automatic download and installation of system updates — otherwise, the jailbreak could be interrupted by an unexpected firmware upgrade.
Sanctuary relies on the Chromium browser engine used in these firmware versions. Before proceeding, it is strongly recommended to verify that your Kindle is compatible:
Tap the «three‑dots» menu in the upper‑right corner of the Kindle screen.
Open the «Web Browser».
Visit the following URL:
http://sanctuary.skyvincent.com/scroll
Verification criterion: If a scrollbar appears on the right side of the page (as shown in the screenshot below), your device is compatible. If no scrollbar appears, upgrade your firmware to a version within the supported range before continuing.
2. Step‑by‑Step Instructions
Step 1 – Open the Jailbreak Page
Tap the «three‑dots» menu in the upper‑right corner, open the «Web Browser», and navigate to:
http://sanctuary.skyvincent.com
Step 2 – Wait for Port Scanning
The page will automatically scan ports and retrieve your device ID. This process takes up to 20 minutes — please be patient and do not interact with the device during this time.
Step 3 – Enter the Device ID
After scanning succeeds, the page will show a device ID (see screenshot below). Type that ID exactly into the input field provided.
Once you have confirmed the ID is correct, click the 【Connect】 button. The system will start downloading the required jailbreak files. During this step, the page will show three successive download confirmations:
appreg.dbappreg.db.bakprivesc.sh
Step 4 – Close the Browser
Make sure the page displays «Downloads Done» (as shown below), then tap the 【×】 in the upper‑right corner to close the web browser.
Step 5 – Trigger the Jailbreak Flow
Tap the upper‑right «three‑dots» menu, then navigate to 【Settings → Help → Getting Started】. After tapping «Getting Started», the screen will show no visible reaction — this is normal. Do not touch anything and wait for several minutes until the jailbreak interface appears (see screenshot).
Step 6 – Confirm Success
When the following screen appears, the jailbreak has completed successfully (if an error alert pops up, ignore it — it does not affect the result).
Although the on‑screen text says the device will reboot automatically, it may not actually reboot. Check your Kindle library directly: if you see a book titled «jailbroken», the process was successful, and you can now start installing plugins.
3. Post‑Jailbreak Auto‑Installation
Sanctuary automatically installs the Hotfix (hotfix patch) after the jailbreak — no manual action is required.
In addition, Sanctuary automatically installs a package manager called KPM for installing and maintaining plugins. Common commands are:
;kpm install koreader – Install KOReader
;kpm upgrade koreader – Upgrade KOReader
;kpm uninstall koreader – Uninstall KOReader
For a full list of available functions, type ;kpm in the search box.
4. Plugin Compatibility Notes
Starting from firmware 5.16.3, the Kindle system’s EABI (Embedded Application Binary Interface) has changed from the original armel (ARM EABI, little‑endian) to armhf (ARM hard‑float). Therefore, when installing plugins, you must choose versions that support HF (hard‑float).
Currently, only a few plugins have been adapted to armhf (e.g., MRPI and KUAL — available on this page). To install other plugins that do not yet support HF, you must first downgrade your Kindle firmware to a version older than 5.16.3.
5. Final Remarks
That completes the full procedure for the Sanctuary jailbreak. If you spot any errors or omissions in this guide, please leave a comment to let us know — and we’d love to hear about your own jailbreak experiences, too. Your insights will help more Kindle enthusiasts unlock the full potential of their devices.
