KO 1/2/3、KV、Kindle 7/8/10、KPW 2/3/4/5 Universal Jailbreak Guide: Firmware 5.12.2.2 – 5.14.2

This method comes from the MobileRead forum post WatchThis – Software Jailbreak for any Kindle by user katadelos. It exploits a vulnerability in the hidden demo mode of the Kindle OS.

Important: ① The flaw was patched in firmware 5.14.3 — this guide only covers firmware 5.12.2.2 – 5.14.2. ② The process wipes all data on the Kindle (books, notes, reading progress). Back up at least the documents folder via USB first.

Supported devices and firmware

First confirm your device model, then the firmware version. Both must match (columns are not one-to-one):

Not sure about your model? Serial numbers identify it — e.g. G000 for KPW2, B0D4 for KV — or check Settings → Device Options → Device Info.

Step-by-step procedure

1. Preparation: enter demo mode

1. On the Kindle, go to Settings → Device Options → Reset.

2. Choose English → United Kingdom during setup and tap Next.

3. When the WiFi screen appears, tap Set up later and Finish Later, then skip the feature tour.

4. Type ;enter_demo in the search bar and press Enter.

5. Tap Settings → Device Options → Restart.

Note: If your firmware is ≤ 5.14.1, complete the 6 steps below. On 5.14.2 without a "Register This Demo" screen, you may skip them. If stuck on the secret gesture (KPW4 or newer), upgrade to 5.14.2 first.

1. On the "Register This Demo" screen, tap the X to skip WiFi setup.

2. Enter any characters into the three-field form and tap CONTINUE.

3. On "Fetching available demo types", tap Skip, then choose standard.

4. On "Demo Mode: Add Content", tap Done.

5. The demo enters the screensaver; tap the screen to reveal the "CONFIGURE DEVICE" error.

6. Use the secret gesture (above) to dismiss the error — this may take several tries.

7. Type ;demo to open the demo menu, tap Sideload Content, then connect via USB.

2. Jailbreaking

Download watchthis-jailbreak-r03.zip: Baidu Netdisk

Unzip to get the watchthis-release folder. Find the subfolder matching your device code (KOA1/KOA2/KOA3/KV/KT2/KT3/KT4/PW2/PW3/PW4/PW5), then the directory for your firmware. You need three files:

• [device code]-[firmware].zip

• demo.json

• Update_hotfix_watchthis_custom.bin

With the Kindle drive visible, sideload the files:

1. Create a folder named .demo at the Kindle root (note the leading dot):

   • Windows: in Command Prompt, switch to the Kindle drive (e.g. E:) and run mkdir .demo && start .demo.

   • macOS: drag the Kindle disk into Terminal and run mkdir .demo && open .demo.

2. Copy [model]-[firmware].zip and demo.json into .demo.

3. Create an empty folder named goodreads inside .demo (leave it empty).

1. Eject the drive and tap Done — the jailbreak script installs silently.

2. Tap Exit to leave the demo menu. If an Application Error appears, hold the power button for 40 seconds to hard reboot, type ;demo to re-enter, then tap Sideload Content → Done → Exit.

3. On newer devices (KPW3/4/5, KO1/2/3, Kindle 8/10, KV), type ;dsts, then tap Help & User Guides → Get Started; on older devices (KPW2, Kindle 7), tap the Store cart icon. The device restarts and runs the script.

3. Final steps

1. After reboot you are still in demo mode (skip if you never used the secret gesture). Type ;uzb and connect via USB.

2. Copy Update_hotfix_watchthis_custom.bin to the Kindle root.

3. Eject, type ;dsts, then tap Device Options → Update Your Kindle → OK.

4. The device restarts, exits demo mode, and boots normally — the jailbreak is done.

Back to Chinese: After booting normally, go to Setting → Language & Dictionaries → Language, scroll to the bottom, choose 简体中文, confirm, and let the device restart.

Installing the Hotfix

Before upgrading firmware (which closes the demo-mode hole), install the latest JailBreak Hotfix. Patches lag behind firmware releases, so also disable automatic updates.

Download JailBreak Hotfix: Official page

1. Connect via USB and unzip JailBreak-x.xx.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zip to get Update_jailbreak_hotfix_x.xx.N_install.bin.

2. Copy the .bin file to the Kindle root and eject.

3. Tap Menu → Settings → Menu → Update Your Kindle and wait for the restart.

4. After reboot you can safely update to the latest firmware.

FAQ

• How do I create an empty file? Windows: type nul > filename in Command Prompt. macOS: touch filename in Terminal.

• How do I exit demo mode? Reset the device — see the next item.

• How do I reset the Kindle? In demo mode type ;uzb, connect via USB, create an empty file named DO_FACTORY_RESTORE (no extension) at the root, then hold the power button until it restarts.
