Kindle Jailbreak Compatibility Quick Reference
Covers all current and discontinued Kindle models · Firmware version requirements for jailbreaking each model
How to check your firmware version: On your Kindle: Menu → Settings → Menu → Device Info, where you will see the "Firmware Version".
Before jailbreaking: To prevent your Kindle from auto-updating during the jailbreak process, it is strongly recommended to fill the storage to leave less than 100MB free and delete any .bin files from the root directory of your Kindle.

Risk notice: Jailbreaking carries risk — this method may, among other things, unexpectedly delete all files. Also, from firmware 5.16.3, plugins must support HF (armhf).
If your firmware is 5.18.1 – 5.18.5, use the AdBreak jailbreak guide instead.
MobileRead user HackerDude released the latest Kindle jailbreak, WinterBreak. It works on every Kindle model from Kindle 5 onward with no firmware restriction. The process is simpler than before, but still follow the steps carefully.
How it works: WinterBreak exploits a cache flaw in the Kindle Store. After visiting the store normally, a .active_content_sandbox cache folder appears at the root; Airplane Mode stops the store from modifying the crafted cache we replace. After a reboot clears the store's memory state, the next store visit loads the crafted page and runs the jailbreak.

Requirements
A computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux.
A Kindle registered with an Amazon account (users in China need a non-China account, e.g. US or JP).
Working WiFi so the Kindle can reach the Store.
Note: Older firmware may fail; if yours is very old, update to a recent version (e.g. 5.17.x) before jailbreaking.

After unzipping you get (on macOS/Linux, .active_content_sandbox is hidden — enable hidden files and don't miss it when copying):

Visit the Kindle Store once while online to confirm the home page loads.
Turn on Airplane Mode from the menu:

Enable Airplane Mode from the menu
Connect the Kindle to your computer via USB.
Copy the unzipped files and folders to the root (overwrite if prompted).
Confirm the root contains 5 items:
.active_content_sandbox,apps,jb.sh,mesquito,patchedUks.sqsh.Eject the drive, unplug, and restart the Kindle.
Tap the Store icon:

Tap the Store icon
When the dialog appears, tap OK or YES:

Allow Airplane Mode to be turned off
You should see the WinterBreak page:

The WinterBreak page loads in the Store
Tap the WinterBreak image; the screen below means success:

Jailbreak complete
Note: Newer models won't restart after these steps; some older ones will. If yours restarts, wait for it to finish before continuing.
Dealing with "Unexpected error"
If the Store shows an Unexpected error, or only the home page loads without the WinterBreak page, delete .active_content_sandbox at the root and retry from the start. Still stuck? Try the author's alternative:
Back up Kindle files, then reset the device.
Before registering an account, connect via USB and copy the 5 files/folders to the root.
Register your Amazon account, then turn on Airplane Mode as fast as possible.
Connect via USB again and delete the cache folder
.active_content_sandbox/store/resource/LocalStorage.Restart, open the Store, and tap OK or YES when prompted to disable Airplane Mode.
Installing the patch
The Hotfix keeps the jailbreak alive across firmware updates, but patches lag behind releases — disable automatic updates for the best protection.
Download Hotfix: Official releases
Connect via USB and copy the
.binfile to the root.Eject, then go to Settings → Update Your Kindle to install.
Wait for the restart, then tap Run Hotfix.
Note: Tap Run Hotfix again after every firmware update.
When everything is done, you can delete the jailbreak files from the Kindle — especially .active_content_sandbox — so the Store works normally again.
Installing plugins
On firmware below 5.16.3 you can install plugins as usual. From 5.16.3 the EABI is armhf, so use HF-capable plugins (e.g. MRPI, KOReader). For non-HF plugins, downgrade below 5.16.3 first.
